First time pumpkin carving.
Admittingly I did try to carve a pumpkin last year actually. After cutting myself several times and covering my pumpkin full with blood I stopped trying to chop the top off though. So I don’t count that experience. In hindsight it might not have been the best idea to chose a small hokkaido pumpkin with an outer skin as thick as a coconut!
One year later I am wiser now and felt ready to try again: This year with a typical pumpkin from Lidl. We gathered at our friend Joen’s kitchen and just kinda started. I left the chopping of the top to my friend Jakob.
You don’t eat halloween pumpkins??!!
This is big news for me! I always assumed that we would get more pumpkin meat out of a pumpkin to prepare food but it seems I was wrong because the others only scoped the seeds with some pumpkin meat out and started carving immediately.
I was looking forward to eating pumpkin sth. though so I spent a considerate amount of time scraping more pumping meat out. Kinda forgetting the main purpose here but I am not spending money on a pumpkin I am not going to eat!
Afterwards I quickly drew a face on the shell and tried to get through it with a gigantic knife. Turns out a smaller knife does the trick even better. Lesson learned.
Loooong Pumpkin dinner preparations
We spent most of our time separating the seeds from the meat. Can you imagine how long it took us?? AGES!!! We had around 10 pumpkins in total so just imagine the amount of seeds! It’s no wonder nuts and seeds are so eypensive.
So after what felt like centuries we had all the seeds to roast in the oven and enough pumpkin meat to make a soup and a turkish treat called: kabak tatlısı. I’ll provide you with the recipe in a later post ;).
Fika and Movie Night “Spirited Away”
After finishing the soup Joen surprised us with lots of delicious Swedish pastries for Fika in his room!! It was a colorful feast for the eye! So we gathered in his room and watched spirited away. And afterwards we ended up watching people eat surströmming for the first time xD What a great end to a great night.
Thanks for organizing the pumpkin event Joen, for letting us use your kitchen/room again and for the generous fika!!
