Before returning to Sweden I just had to take up the dinner invitation by Simplé! So my friend Anh and I met in Spandau and were positively surprised by the quality and service waiting there!
Simplé is a new treasure freshly opened last year in 2018. It’s a restaurant you would actually expect to find in the centre of Berlin. But this gem is located in Spandau.
The restaurant values fresh and healthy ingredients and I can verify that first hand! It offers mainly Vietnamese food mixed with Thai influence.
In comparison to other Vietnamese restaurant, where you get lost in the menu card after dish 98, Simplé’s menu card is very clear and cleanly structured.
A funny fact I was told was: names for the dishes are taken from movies! For instance we are having „Heaven can wait“, “The Peanuts“, “Chicken Run“ or “The Legend of Buddha“. I was especially cracking up at the starter we had: “Burrito Battle”!
Aloha ALOE | 3,90 €
Aloe vera nectar with honey and lime juice
German: Nektar aus Aloe Vera mit Honig & Limettensaft
Oh it’s been a while since I’ve last drank Aloe Vera juice and this one came at the exact right time! It was so refehshing and had just the right amount of sweetness. The honey and lime juice supported the aloea vera without dominating it. And look at the presentation! What a feast for the eye. Depending on your taste you can take the lime slices and make your drink more sour if you’d like that.
Strawberry to Heaven | 3,90 €
Fresh limes, strawberry, raw sugar and mango spritzer
German: Frische Limetten, Erdbeer, Rohzucker und Mangoschorle
This one my friend Anh had and she enjoyed it.
BURRITO BATTLE | 4,50 €
Vietnamese burrito with marinated beef, fresh rocket salad, served with homemade, sweet and sour sauce and peanuts
German: Vietnamesischer Burrito mit mariniertem Rindfleisch, frischem Rucolasalat, serviert mit hausgemachter, süß-sauren Soße und Erdnüssen
I was cracking up when I read the name. Summer rolls have always been summer rolls for me. But if I was trying to explain summer rolls to a Mexican friend I would indeed describe them as Vietnamese burritos haha.
But back to the food: This summer roll burrito was amazing! The beef had the same taste like the popular Vietnamese marinated grilled pork from the dish Bún chả (Vietnamese grilled pork with rice vermicelli)! And with it came a real smokey taste from the grill as well! My friend and me were shocked by the authenticity of the smokey marinated beef!
GLORY DUCK | 11,90 €
Grilled duck on pan-fried vegetables, rounded off with jasmine rice and peanut sauce, flambéed as a highlight with rum
Gegrillte Ente auf pfannengeschwenktem Gemüse, abgerundet mit Jasminreis und Erdnusssoße, als Highlight mit Rum flambiert
This dish was a recommendation from Simple so I trusted them and they did most defnitvely not dissapoint!
If the burritto hasn’t already sold me than the main dishes we had definitivly has. This dish came in a sizzling hot pan and made delicious sizzling sounds. The meat was just as hot as you would expect.
The dish comes with a separate plate of rice, salad and a piece of rice cracker (Bánh tráng nướng). I like how they introduce only a piece of Vietnamese rice cracker into the dish to let people try it since it’s fairly uncommon in Germany.
Furthermore, I enjoyed how they put a modern twist to the duck with peanut sauce by serving it with grilled duck and veggies separated from rice and salad. Everything tasted very fresh and the vibrant colors of everything we ordered was smiling at me.
The only negative thing I have to add is that the rice was dry and more peanut sauce would have been nice. Because by the middle of the dish the duck was drying paired with only rice. Luckily I had my refreshing Aloha Aloe drink. But again – oh boy, the smokiness of the grilled veggies and duck had me swooning! I love it!
SLAMMIN SALMON | 11,90 €
Red organic salmon of the special kind à la Teriyaki with cherry tomatoes, crisp fresh salad and lime dressing
Roter Bio-Lachs der besonderen Art à la Teriyaki mit Cherrytomaten, knackig frischem Salat und Limettendressing
By now you probably took my hint that the smokey taste of the grilled dishes has me all over the place. Of course the salmon dish from my friend was no exception: The salmon was buttery soft on the inside and crispy from the grill on the outside while the smokey taste was running through the whole salmon! Paired with cherry tomatoes and salad you get a fresh adventure through mother nature!
SIMPLE FLAN | 3,20 €
A kind of panna cotta made from coconut milk with strawberry or mango sauce
Eine Art Panna-cotta, aus Kokosmilch mit Erdbeer- oder Mangosoße
This Pana Cotta was on the dense side! After our savoury meal it was a welcoming refresher. And it was still cold when it arrived at our table. The ratio between mango sauce and panna cotta was perfect! Not too sweet nor blend!
CHUOI NEP NUONG | 3,90 €
Sweet baby banana wrapped in grilled sticky rice in banana leaf, served with coconut sauce
Süße Baby-Banane umhüllt von gegrilltem Klebreis im Bananenblatt, serviert mit Kokossoße
Since I’ve had a similar dessert in the morning at Bac Hai Restaurant, I had something to compare to. While this one from Simplé was nice I have to admit that the one from Bac.Hai won the battle though. Head over to my Bac.Hai blogpost to read about this heavenly dessert. This one at Simplé was harder in consitency and was a bit drying. But I believe if I hadn’t had the one in the morning this one would have been my very first banh chuoi nep ever and would have probably been my favourite. Because it was the first one for my friend and she really liked it!
Upon reaching the restaurant the first thing you are greeted with is a lovely decorated small garden infront of the restaurant.
The interior is a fusion between modern bar and wall art with traditionell Vietnamese decorations and carved wooden wall panels. In addition to the two rooms inside, Simple offers an outdoor as well.
The ambience here is great! From the staff to the actual customers: people are happy and enjoying a good time here. I’ve had several other customers coming up to me asking about me taking food photos and striking conversation about how much they enjoyed the food here!
The staff was exceptional nice and attentive. Occasionally coming up, asking if everything was fine and advising us on what we could order!
Watch their video to get an impression on their interior:
I am impressed by the quality you get here. Especially the smokiness of the grilled dishes has fully convinced me. Only the dry rice on that day might need improvement. But this is a restaurant I would even bring my Vietnamese parents to because with its modern twist it still preserves the authentic taste of Vietnamese dishes (like the marinated beef). My parents are very picky and some of their important criteria for grilled meat is: It tastes best piping hot with a smokey taste to it! Both things, Simplé manage to deliver.
Furthermore, I want to see the restaurant by daylight with the garden highlighted by the sun! So I have another reason to come here.
A reminder: As of now, you cannot pay with card yet. But come for the smoking hot food!
